Today I’ve been focusing on making progress on one of my custom orders. One of my favorite clients is getting married, and has asked me to make her wedding ring! I was so pleased to be asked, and I’ve been wracking my brain to get just the right design to go with her rather unusual engagement ring. Nothing to big, nothing to overwhelm the ring, just simply… lovely. It’s been harder than I thought.

Her fiancee picked the nicest multi-stone ring I’ve seen in a long time, and I have been studying it closely. First, she wanted me to remove those tiny aquamarines around the edges, and adjust the fit of the shank ever so slightly.

No problem.

Then she wants the wedding ring to blend nicely with the flower of the engagement ring, so I’ve been experimenting with several rather simple, yet elegant forged silver designs. Due to the flower, I am fairly focused on leaf and vine inspired ring, but I’ve been having the worst time visualizing flat 2D drawings with a lovely 3D ring.

So I’ve taken a new approach. I’ve decided to sketch in wire, instead of by pencil. It’s very liberating!

What do you guys think?
